Most homeowners don't think twice about branches hanging over their fence - until something goes wrong. The truth is, branches that rest or rub against a wood fence wear down the surface over time. Add in the weight during a storm or heavy growth season, and you've got a real problem on your hands.

Here's what we were working with: branches from a large tree running along the entire back fence line, drooping down and pressing against the top of the fence panels. Some branches were long enough to hang well past the fence cap. That kind of constant contact traps moisture and creates the kind of conditions that speed up wood rot.

There's also the pest angle. Branches that bridge over a fence give ants, rodents, and other critters a direct highway into your yard - and sometimes right toward your home. It's one of those things that seems minor until you're dealing with an infestation or a fence board that's starting to fail.

We went through and trimmed back the branches running along the perimeter, clearing them off the fence line and opening things up. The goal wasn't to strip the tree down - it was to get those branches up and away from the fence so they're not sitting on it, rubbing against it, or creating any entry points. Clean cuts, nothing left dragging.

This kind of perimeter tree trimming is something we handle regularly, and it's one of those jobs where doing it right actually protects something you've already invested in. A fence replacement costs a lot more than keeping up with the branches that hang over it.
